- Hip stiffness that limits your range of motion and hampers your ability to walk/
You may need a hip replacement because of:
- Osteoarthritis.
- Inflammatory arthritis
- Hip injuries
- Developmental hip dysplasia
- Neoplasms
How is the surgery performed?
To perform a hip replacement surgery, the surgeon will:
- Make an incision on the hip area, cutting through various layers of tissue.
- Take out the damaged and diseased bone and cartilage, leaving the healthy bone undisturbed.
- Install the replacement socket onto the pelvic bone.
- Introduce a metallic stem into the upper part of the thigh bone, which is then capped with a substitute ball.
What is the recovery period after surgery? How soon can I travel back home?
After the surgery, rehabilitation commences within 24 hours. Typically, hip replacement patients start walking using walking aids such as a cane, walker, or crutches within a day or two. As time passes, the walking distance and frequency will gradually increase. The complete recovery period varies from two to eight weeks, depending on various factors, including the individual’s overall health.
Typically, patients can return home within 7-10 days after the hip replacement surgery.
How long does a hip replacement last?
In general, a hip replacement implant is expected to function well for a period of 10 to 20 years, with some lasting even beyond that duration.
